Key Responsibilities and Duties
- Load Inspection & Handling: Selecting appropriate lifting accessories (slings, chains, shackles) for the load, inspecting them for damage, and attaching/detaching them safely.
- Signalling & Communication: Providing clear, standardized hand signals or radio instructions to the crane operator to move, raise, or lower loads precisely.
- Safety Compliance: Ensuring all lifts adhere to the LOLER 1998 regulations and BS7121 code of practice.
- Hazard Assessment: Checking ground conditions, checking for overhead hazards, and calculating load weights/centers of gravity to prevent accidents.
- Site Safety: Maintaining safe, cordoned-off areas to protect workers and pedestrians during lifting operations.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Certification: Typically requires a accredited qualification, such as the CPCS (Construction Plant Competence Scheme) A40 or NPORS Slinger/Signaller card.
- Communication: Strong verbal communication skills for radio use and proficiency in standard hand signals.
- Physical Fitness & Awareness: High level of situational awareness, spatial awareness, and ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Technical Knowledge: Understanding of load-bearing capacities, lifting equipment limitations, and site safety procedures
