Job Summary:

We are looking for an experienced Overhead Line Operative (OHL Operative) to assist in the construction, maintenance, and repair of low voltage (LV), high voltage (HV), and extra-high voltage (EHV) overhead power lines up to 400kV. The ideal candidate will have experience in working at heights, installing conductors, poles, and towers, and ensuring compliance with all safety standards and regulations.


Key Responsibilities:

Overhead Line Installation & Maintenance:

  • Install, maintain, and repair wooden poles, steel towers, cross-arms, and insulators for overhead power lines.
  • String, tension, and secure conductors, cables, and stay wires according to project specifications.
  • Carry out reconductoring and refurbishment of existing overhead line networks to improve reliability.
  • Operate and use MEWPs (Mobile Elevated Work Platforms), pole erection units (PEUs), and winches for overhead installations.
  • Conduct live-line and de-energized work, ensuring minimal disruption to power supply.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure all work complies with National Grid, Distribution Network Operators (DNOs), and HSE safety regulations.
  • Perform risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) before starting work.
  • Follow LOLER & PUWER regulations for lifting and handling operations.
  • Adhere to strict safety guidelines, using correct personal protective equipment (PPE) and following live working procedures where applicable.
  • Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks, and emergency response drills.

Use of Tools & Equipment:

  • Operate power tools, tensioning devices, hydraulic presses, and crimping tools for conductor and cable installation.
  • Perform routine checks and maintenance on tools, lifting gear, and PPE to ensure safety and efficiency.
  • Work with MEWPs, cranes, and pole erection units for lifting and placing overhead line infrastructure.

Teamwork & Coordination:

  • Work alongside overhead line engineers, supervisors, and plant operators to complete tasks efficiently.
  • Communicate effectively with team members to ensure safe operations and workflow.
  • Provide guidance and mentoring to new apprentices or junior operatives.

Fault Finding & Emergency Repairs:

  • Identify and repair faults in overhead line networks, ensuring quick power restoration.
  • Carry out emergency call-outs for storm damage repairs or urgent maintenance.
  • Use thermal imaging and voltage detection equipment to assess line integrity and performance.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

Essential:

CSCS/EUSR Card (Energy & Utility Skills Register)
Overhead Line Competence (OLEC) Certification
Working at Heights Certification
Experience in Overhead Line Construction & Maintenance
Knowledge of electrical safety procedures and industry regulations

Desirable:

IPAF (3a/3b) MEWP Licence
First Aid at Work Certification
