Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Oil Mechanic specializing in the maintenance, servicing, and repair of high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) transformers, circuit breakers, and oil-insulated equipment up to 400kV. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in handling oil filtration, oil replacement, testing, and fault diagnosis to ensure the reliability and efficiency of electrical transmission systems.

Key Responsibilities:

Transformer & Switchgear Oil Maintenance:

  • Conduct oil filtration, degassing, and dehydration of transformers and switchgear up to 400kV.
  • Perform oil sampling and analysis to assess dielectric strength, moisture content, and contamination levels.
  • Drain, refill, and circulate insulating oils to maintain optimal equipment performance.
  • Replace and maintain bushings, gaskets, seals, and radiators on oil-filled transformers.

Testing & Fault Diagnosis:

  • Conduct DGA (Dissolved Gas Analysis) and interpret oil test results to detect potential transformer faults.
  • Perform pressure testing, insulation resistance testing, and breakdown voltage tests on oil-filled equipment.
  • Identify leaks, overheating issues, and insulation breakdowns, implementing corrective measures.
  • Maintain detailed inspection reports and test records for compliance and future reference.

Equipment Installation & Overhaul:

  • Assist in the installation, commissioning, and retrofitting of oil-filled power transformers and reactors.
  • Carry out preventative maintenance and emergency repairs on oil-insulated circuit breakers, tap changers, and bushing assemblies.
  • Ensure flushing and refilling of transformer oil during major maintenance or refurbishment activities.
  • Support the vacuum filling process to remove moisture and ensure proper insulation levels.

Safety & Compliance:

  • Adhere to National Grid, DNO, and manufacturer standards for oil handling and maintenance.
  • Ensure compliance with HSE regulations, COSHH, and environmental standards for oil disposal and handling.
  • Conduct risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) before performing maintenance activities.
  • Follow lockout-tagout (LOTO) procedures and high-voltage safety protocols to prevent electrical hazards.

Collaboration & Documentation:

  • Work closely with substation engineers, electrical technicians, and HV specialists to ensure efficient maintenance operations.
  • Maintain accurate logs, inspection reports, and oil quality documentation for regulatory compliance.
  • Train and mentor junior oil mechanics and apprentices in best practices.

Qualifications & Skills Required:

Essential:

CSCS or EUSR (Energy & Utility Skills Register) Card
